It is estimated that there is a potential for approximately 16,36,043 MW of renewable energy in the country, which includes solar, wind, small hydro, and biomass. A significant portion of this potential is applicable to grid applications, which can be broken down as follows: Solar Power around 7,48,990 MW, Wind Power [at 120 m. height] 6,95,509 MW, Small Hydro Power (up to 25 MW) 21134 MW, Biomass Power 17,536 MW, Cogeneration - Bagasse 5,000 MW, Waste to Energy 2,554 MW, and Large Hydro Power 1,45,320 MW.

Here are the specifics of what's been done to boost renewable energy usage in the country:

  • Authorizing FDI of up to 100 per cent using the automated procedure,

  • Projects that will generate solar or wind power and sell that power across state lines will have their ISTs fees waived if they are commissioned by June 30, 2025.

  • A Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) Pathway Declaration through 2029-30,

  • Establishing Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks to facilitate the construction of large-scale RE projects by providing land and transmission to RE developers.

  • Plans include the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), the Solar Rooftop Phase II, the 12000 MW CPSU Scheme Phase II, etc.

  • Extraction of renewable energy through the construction of new transmission lines and sub-station capacity as part of the Green Energy Corridor Scheme.

  • Announcement of Solar Photovoltaic System/Device Deployment Standards,

  • Project Development Cell Establishment for Investment Attraction and Facilitation

  • Procurement of Electricity from Grid-Connected Solar PV and Wind Projects—Standard Bidding Rules for a Tariff-Based, Competitive Bidding Process.

  • To prevent late payments from distribution licensees to RE generators, the government has mandated that power be shipped only when a Letter of Credit (LC) or advance payment has been received.

  • Announcement of the Green Energy Open Access Regulations 2022 to Foster Renewable Energy.

  • Warning About the Implementation of the Energy (Late Payment Surcharge and Related Matters) Regulations (LPS rules).

  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission has been approved with the goal of making India a global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) has been launched to ease the selling of Renewable Energy Electricity through exchanges.

According to the REN21 Renewables 2022 Global Status Report, India has the fourth-highest installed capacity for renewable energy (including large hydro) in the world, as well as the fourth-highest capacity for wind power and solar power.

Information pertaining to Year-wise the following is a rundown of the installed capacity additions that have come from various sources since 2015: (In GW, as on Feb 2023)

The breakdown of RE (including Large Hydro) and Non-RE Generation's annual (in BU) energy output by source is as under.

Energy generated from different sources (in BU)| RESI Report

The proportion of electricity generated by renewable sources, including hydropower, is expected to reach approximately 21.62% in 2021-22, up from 19.33% in 2018-19 and 19.33% in 2021-2022, respectively.
