Solar energy has a significant potential to be utilized in India. It is estimated that India's landmass receives over 5,000 trillion kWh worth of energy every single year, with the majority of the country receiving between 3-5 kWh per square metre every single day. Solar power in this country has been estimated to have a potential of approximately 750 gigawatts peak (GWp) based on the amount of land that is available and the amount of solar radiation that is there.
There has been an increase in solar power capacity in the country of 68,380 megawatts (MW) so far. State-wise details are as under
It is estimated that the country has a potential for around 16,36,043 MW of renewable energy, which comes from sources like as solar, wind, small hydro, and biomass. A sizeable portion of this potential is applicable to grid applications.
As of the 28th of February, 2023, a total of 168.96 giga watts (GW) worth of renewable energy capacity projects (including large hydro) had been installed in the country. In addition, projects with a total capacity of 82.62 GW are currently in various stages of the implementation process, while projects with a total capacity of 40.89 GW are currently in various stages of the bidding process.
